Orchid Updates July 2024
The current growth and condition of my orchid collection for July 2024. These pictures were taken a few days before the end of July. I am leaving for a vacation in Maui for about 5 days, so I will do another update once I’m back. All of my summer blooming phalaenopsis orchids are inside my greenhouse shelves, along with my no ID orchids that have finished blooming. The rest of my blooming orchids are on a separate shelf, which I will transfer to the greenhouse when their flowers drop.
The Greenhouse Orchids
Phalaenopsis WS Watermark
You can see how the low humidity was affecting my orchids before I placed them all inside the greenhouse set up. Most of the roots near the upper stem were drying out, but the roots below appear to be doing better now. There are new roots near the stem, as well as a new leaf growing out. There are a couple of new root tips growing too.
Phalaenopsis Lyndon Mix Zebra 707
This orchid came with this flower spike when I purchased it, so no real change there. It does seem to be pushing out a root at the stem, and there’s new root tips growing throughout the pot.
Phalaenopsis Speciosa X Sib
Unfortunately, the newest root this orchid came to me with had dried off. But I’m hopeful, as there’s a new leaf, and some new roots growing in. No real change for the roots inside the pot from what I could see.
Phalaenopsis Tetraspis Wilson 214
Here’s another orchid I managed to dry up a newer root. I was able to save this root near the upper stem after it went into the greenhouse, but it took a few weeks for it to continue growing its root tip. It already had this flower spike, but it looks like it might be growing some buds. And there’s some new root growth and root branching.
Phalaenopsis Bellina Var. Alba Wilson
One of my worst off orchids, besides the ones in my ICU set up. It lost two of its leaves in the middle of the stem, and had a new root dry off. I’m hoping it will bounce back from this one little root tip that is growing inside the pot.
Phalaenopsis Tetraspis C1
Another victim of my dry, low humidity. There is a new leaf and root growing though, as well as some root branching. There also seems to be both a root and a flower spike growing from the stem. Nothing notable from the pot roots.
Phalaenopsis Bellina X Sib
My Bellina has suffered from a bit of root rot under my care. It’s looking a bit better with 3, maybe 4 new roots growing from the stem, and this one little branching root.
Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory
I was lucky and my Sweet Memory came with a bud that bloomed about a week after I purchased it. It has kept up this flower for about 4 months now, and it still smells like Froot Loops. This leaf is currently growing out, and there’s some new root tips.
Phalaenopsis Speciosa Purple Mountain
My Purple Mountain came with this long flower spike, but it is growing new buds, and a new offshoot spike with its own buds. The only new roots I saw was this one near the top of the stem.
Phalaenopsis Su’s Glad Kid Blue
This yellow flower spike is worrisome, I’m not really sure whether I can do anything to salvage it. At least there are new roots and root tips growing, and the top most leaf is getting bigger.
Phalaenopsis Miro Seika
We’ve got a new leaf and 3 new roots growing, plus some new root tips.
Phalaenopsis KS Vlogold Green
There’s not much growth from this orchid either. It already came with this flower spike when I first purchased it. There might be a flower spike or root coming from the stem, but I can’t really tell for now. Otherwise, there’s just this one root tip growing from the bottom of the pot.
Phalaenopsis Yu Yang Little Peacock 387
This orchid has had the most growth, but it did already have a good root system. It’s growing a new leaf, plus several root tips, including the aerial root. I’m going to place a heavier pebble on top of this root that is trying to crawl out of the pot to hopefully shift its growth back inside. Also found a surprise root that is actually growing out of the bottom of the pot.
Phalenopsis Violacea Var. Coerulea X Sib
Another orchid with dried up roots. But these two with previously dried out root tips have started growing again. There are also a bunch of tiny root tips growing inside the pot.
Phalaenopsis Mini Mark
My poor Mini Mark has been through it. It actually grew out this flower spike, but the first few buds ended up blasting. I’m hoping these new ones at the end will pull through. There is a new leaf growing, but I’m not sure if this is a flower spike or a new root growing on the stem. It hasn’t grown at all for a few weeks. It might be concentrating on growing all the root tips inside the pot instead.
Phalaenopsis Allura Al’s Rainbow
We have a tiny new leaf growing here, and some root tips. I’m not sure if there’s another root coming in from the stem.
Phalaenopsis Jiaho’s Pink Girl Little Miss
One of my rehab orchids that grew enough new roots to come out of my ICU set up. So far, it is working on a new leaf, and continuing more root growth.
Phalaenopsis Schilleriana
I’m pretty sure this is some sort of Schilleriana orchid, based on the mottled leaves, but I lost the tag during its time in my ICU set up. All of these roots were new and grown during its rehab time, as it was completely rootless at one point. It is also growing out a new leaf.
Phalaenopsis Lioulin Blue Jenny
This orchid came to me pretty tiny, but it did start growing new roots and a leaf. The root tips have also started growing again where it once was dried up. I’m not a fan of the way the leaves grow twisted around the stem, but hopefully, it straightens out as it grows bigger and matures.
Phalaenopsis Sogo Vivien
One of two Sogo Viven’s I own. There’s not much growth yet since its blooms just finished about a month ago, but there are new roots and a new leaf.
No ID Orchids
Just a bunch of my no ID phals. Most of them just had their blooms fall about a month ago, so there isn’t much root growth. Just a few new root tips, with most of the growth being a new leaf. The smaller no ID orchids recently came out of my ICU set up, or were just struggling for a while before I put them in the greenhouse.
The Orchid Shelf
Phalaenopsis SWR Snowflake X Phalaenopsis Speciosa F. Coerulea
When I first received this baby orchid, it had some root rot already on its few roots. Those have already died off, but it has grown a new root and a new leaf in the meantime. It is also recovering from sun damage from the grow lights, before I had adjusted the light levels inside the greenhouse.
Phalaenopsis Queen Beer
My one orchid I managed to rebloom from last year. I do enjoy the bright purple flowers. Once the blooms wilt, I will repot this in my self watering set up and grow it inside the greenhouse with the other orchids.
No ID Orchids
The blooming orchids are fairly new, bought from Trader Joe’s, so there won’t be any new growth. They are still getting used to being repot into pumice, and a few of the buds did end up bud blasting. The smaller orchids are rehabbing from sun damage, but they look like they are ready to be placed back into the greenhouse.
